Mountaintop makes outdoor backpacks in various sizes, so anyone can find one that is just right.

Suitable for Most Airlines

mountain top backpack review

The 40L backpack from Mountaintop is one of our favorites because it’s one of the most versatile packs available. This backpack is 20.1 inches high, 13.8 inches wide and 6.3 inches deep, which fits into the required dimensions for carry-on luggage for most airlines.

This doesn’t mean it’s a small backpack, though. You can fit quite a lot of stuff in there.

In fact, 40 liters is enough even for extended backpacking trips for many people. Furthermore, you can use adjustable compression straps on the outside of the backpack to hang all of your hiking gear such a small tent, a sleeping bag and/or a hiking pole.

Even though it offers a lot of space, this backpack is not too big so it’s also perfect for day trips. It also features a Computer Compartment where you can safely fit a 17-inch laptop. This makes it work great also as a travel backpack for shorter trips. The backpack is also very lightweight (only 2.1 pounds) which is always a good thing.

The Mountaintop 40L backpack has side pockets for water bottles on each side and a wide external pocket at the front. There is also a small pocket hidden behind a Velcro panel where you can keep your valuables. The backside of the backpack and the shoulder straps are padded with mesh lining which makes them comfortable and breathable. There is also a water-resistant cover.

The backpack also comes with a hip belt which is very important for back support. It is adjustable from 25 to 53 inches. The only problem with it is that it’s not removable.

PROS

  • Lightweight
  • Meets the size requirements for carry-on luggage for most airlines
  • Has a dedicated laptop compartment
  • Water resistant cover

CONS

  • No internal frame
  • The hip belt is not removable
  • The zippers could be better

Perfect for Camping

Mountaintop 60L Hiking Backpack

When you are going hiking or camping there is a good chance you’ll want to take 3 things - a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, and a tent. Even though they are usually not heavy, these items are often bulky and you’ll need at least a 60L backpack to carry them all. Mountaintop 60L and 65L are both great choices for camping and extended trips. They are not oversized, but they provide enough space to fit all of your camping gear.

These two models are quite similar. They are both made of water-resistant nylon and have an internal frame made of plastic. Even though it’s made of plastic, the frame is still very tough and virtually unbendable. Both backpacks have a separated compartment at the bottom which is very useful as well as an extension collar at the top that gives you 5L of extra space.

There is a torso length adjustment system with 8 settings. The shoulder straps are also adjustable. There is a sternum strap that makes the backpack even more comfortable and has a buckle with an emergency whistle.

The 60L Mountaintop backpack is actually a bit higher (31.9 inches) than the 65L backpack (29.5 inches), but it’s also a bit more narrow. The capacity is very similar, so you can choose the shape that fits your body the best. Keep in mind that the 60L backpack is also heavier (4.3 pounds) than the 65L one (3.6 pounds). They are bought quite light, though, so this shouldn’t be a problem.

PROS

  • Large capacity
  • Adjustable weight distribution system allows for a perfect fit
  • Tough internal frame
  • Padded and breathable straps and back panel

CONS

  • Even though the pack is height adjustable, the hip belt might not fit all sizes
  • The nylon material is prone to wear
  • The zippers could be better

Hydration System Compatible

The Mountaintop 70L is a very large backpack, perfect for extended trips and expeditions where you will be carrying a lot of gear. It can be expanded to fit up to 80 liters. This hiking backpack is 33.5 inches high, 13.8 inches wide and 11.8 inches deep and it weighs just below 5 pounds.

The backpack has various compartments and pockets which are great for organizing all of your gear.

Inside, there is a separate bottom compartment that is ideal for storing your shoes or dirty stuff. Besides the side pockets for water bottles, you’ll also find pockets on the hip belt which are very useful for quick access to small items.

One of the big advantages of this backpack is that it’s completely compatible with hydration systems. There is a special pocket where you can fit a hydration pack (up to 3l) with an opening for the water tube.

Mountaintop 70L + 10L hiking backpack has received overwhelmingly positive user reviews. The only complaint was the height adjustment system on the back. Some users have felt that it’s too bulky and therefore might dig into your back. However, this shouldn’t be a big problem if you adjust the torso length and the shoulder straps carefully.

PROS

  • Very large capacity
  • The inside space is very well organized with lots of useful pockets
  • Dedicated bladder pocket for 3l hydration pack
  • Height adjustable

CONS

  • Could be more comfortable
  • Bulky height adjustment strap on the back
  • The frame could be stronger considering how much weight the backpack can carry

Final Verdict

Mountaintop has proven that you really don’t have to spend a fortune in order to get a good hiking/travel backpack. All of their models are made of water-resistant material and have an additional rain cover. They are also very comfortable and practical. You’ll find enough pockets, compartments, straps, and attachment points on each of their models. Furthermore, they look quite elegant and there are various color options to choose from.

Which size you choose will ultimately depend on your needs. We love the Mountaintop 40L Hiking Backpack because it’s perfect for short trips, but it will also be enough for anything if you are a light packer. If you are preparing for a long hiking trip and/or need to carry a lot of gear, you might want to choose one of the larger options. Finally, we hope that this Mountaintop backpacks review will help you find the right one!
