When it’s raining outside, it’s really hard to get out of the house. Everything seems to be working against you. You have to carry your laptop, your phone, your papers, and a million other things with you, and on top of it all, you have to make sure your backpack won’t get wet. To us, finding a waterproof backpack that will actually keep all those things safe was an impossible task. And then we heard of Rains. This is our Rains MSN backpack review – check it out if you’re considering getting one!
Whenever you’re leaving the house, you need to take a bunch of things with you, and somehow it never seems to be enough. When it’s raining, that list almost doubles if you want to keep your valuables safe. And when you’re going on a short trip, or to a festival, you should be ready for whatever might come your way weather-wise.
For us, this has always been a challenge. How can you pack everything safely, without having to worry about the water soaking through the bag? So we got rain covers for our backpacks, but it always seemed like too much of a hassle. So, when we heard of Rains MSN backpack, and the fact that Rains advertises it as completely waterproof, we simply had to give it a go.
Rains was founded in 2012, and it is a Danish company. They started off with a simple attempt to reinvent the ordinary raincoat. They have since become famous for their rainwear – raincoats, jackets, bags, backpacks, tablet and phone sleeves, and even trousers.
Denmark is a country that has about 120 rainy days each year. So, we can definitely understand how they got sick and tired of classical rainwear and came to this idea. But, what no one expected was that their designs and high quality will make them world famous.
Rains is now a synonym for rainwear. Let’s see if their MSN backpack meets the high standards we all learned to expect from them.
Sharp, simple, timeless Scandinavian design is clearly visible on the MSN backpack. Simple lines and details in combination with amazing materials and lovely quality.
It comes in five matte colors – green, black, smoke, scarlet, blue, and dark teal.
This means that you can choose the one that suits your personal style best.
Completely lined, this interesting waterproof backpack has an internal laptop compartment and a large main compartment. Its height is 16.1”, width is 14.6”, and depth is 5.9”. Basically, this means it’s large enough to fit just about anything you might want to take with you.
This model has the shape of a classic backpack, but with a twist. It has a grab handle, the shoulder straps are adjustable, and it only has one storage section that you close with two fish hook buckle clips.
Even when it’s fully loaded this backpack looks slim and nice. Plus, the fact that it doesn't look like an ordinary backpack makes it perfect for any purpose you have in mind – work, school, or travel.
Material and Durability
When it comes to the material, the MSN backpack is a 50-50 combination of polyurethane and polyester. Polyester is the material you usually use for sealing wood floors – it’s what makes this backpack 100% waterproof.
We did a water test to check the waterproof claim. It really is true – we poured water on it, we went outside during a pretty heavy rain, walked around a bit, and nothing. The inside of the backpack was completely dry. Although, during this test, we did find out something useful. The bag dries off really quickly after we brought it in from the rain.
As durability goes, we’re not completely sure. It seems durable enough, and the users love it. On the other hand, you can’t really know until you’ve worn a backpack for several years or so.
Features and Functionality
This is simplicity embodied, so don’t expect a ton of features. There are no side pockets, no organizers, no designated space for your charger, sunglasses, or water bottle. But, the designers didn't have ordinary backpack use in mind. This is something you can take to work, or on a short business trip and still feel comfortable.
It has one main compartment, and in it, next to your back, a laptop pocket that has no padding to make it shockproof. You can easily fit a 15” laptop inside, but we would definitely recommend using a laptop sleeve with this backpack, so if something does happen, your precious device is safe.
MSN has a nice capacity of 12.3 liters, or 3 gallons, which means you can fit a decent amount of things next to your laptop. So a change of clothes, all the accessories you might need, a snack, your laptop, phone, and chargers should fit in there quite nicely. One thing they did add are adjustable snap buttons on the sides.
This feature can help make your backpack slimmer when you’re not carrying a lot of things, or make it bigger when you really want to pack everything you need.
Well, we have to admit we didn’t really load it to its full capacity. We put in a laptop, a phone, a sweater, lunch, and a water bottle. With all of this, it was really comfy to carry around.
If you’re looking for something that can withstand a rainy or a snowy day, this is it. Just bear in mind that the materials it’s made of are not really heat friendly, so if it’s hot outside, your back might get a bit wet.
Also, according to some users, if you overload it, the straps might cut into your shoulders. We believe that would make it significantly less comfortable to carry.
